Day 21: How to Sustain a Practice When Neither Novelty Nor the End Is Helping

RAMADAN

The last third of any sustained practice has a specific quality. The novelty is gone — it left around day ten. The end is not yet close enough to provide momentum. What remains is the practice itself, without support from either direction.

This is the most structurally honest part of the month. What is keeping the practice intact right now is what was actually built in the first two weeks.

Today, identify it. Not the ideal reason — the actual one. Habit. Investment in having started. Accountability to someone. Stubbornness. Whatever it is, name it without judgment. Then assess whether it is sufficient to carry the final nine days. If it is, continue. If it is not, add structural support now rather than waiting to see if you manage without it.
