Day 8: How to Locate What You Are Avoiding

RAMADAN

Avoidance is not passive. It requires active maintenance — consistent small decisions not to look, not to say, not to engage. That maintenance has a cost, and it tends to organize itself around a specific subject.

You already know what yours is. The thing you are consistently not thinking about, not bringing up, not examining. It has a shape and a location in your life even if you have not named it.

Today's task is only to name it. Not to address it, not to resolve it, not to decide what to do about it. Name it in one sentence, written down, and put it somewhere you will see it again.

The naming does not require action. But it does end the particular expenditure of energy that not-naming requires. That energy becomes available for something else.
